Definition: referral vs affiliate in crypto

A crypto referral program is a simple share-and-earn system: you get a unique link, share it with friends, and earn a small reward (often mutual — both you and your friend get a bonus). An affiliate program is a professional partnership: you apply, get approved, receive a dashboard with analytics, and earn ongoing commissions based on the trading activity of your referrals. Most crypto exchanges offer both tiers, with the affiliate program providing higher commission rates and more tools.

Commission structure comparison

Referral programs typically offer: fixed bonuses ($10-$25 per signup), mutual rewards (both parties get a bonus), simple one-tier structure, and no minimum requirements. Affiliate programs typically offer: revenue share (20-70% of trading fees), tiered commissions (higher volume = higher rate), sub-affiliate overrides (earn from your affiliates' referrals), and dedicated affiliate manager support. Binance, for example, offers a basic referral with 20% commission to anyone, but its affiliate program provides up to 50% for approved partners.

Requirements and approval

Referral programs: no approval needed, anyone with an account can share. Affiliate programs: typically require application with proof of audience. Binance requires 5,000+ social media followers or 500+ community members. OKX has lower barriers — even small creators can apply. Some programs like MEXC and KuCoin have no formal approval process, making their affiliate tiers accessible to everyone.

Which should you choose?

Choose a referral program if: you're sharing with friends/family, you have a small audience (<1,000), or you want simplicity. Choose an affiliate program if: you have an established audience (1,000+), you create content regularly, or you want to maximize earnings. For professional creators and KOLs, always apply for the affiliate tier — the commission difference between 20% (referral) and 50% (affiliate) on the same platform is 2.5x more revenue.
